10 Week Book Giveaway--Week #9

For details about this contest visit here. But basically, all you have to do is answer this week's question in the comments and on Friday, I'll choose one of the names and announce the winner.

Okay, so my question today is:

What is your favorite Sunday/leisure dinner?

I grew up in a traditional household where we ate dinner every night as a family at 6:00 sharp. On Sundays, we'd have roast, potatoes and several sidedishes. During the summer, most of the sidedishes were from the garden, complete with a few grains of dirt in the lettuce.

This past Sunday, I cooked a roast, made mashed potatoes and rolls (my kids would say THEY made them), and we had corn on the cob, carrots, and I actually made a dessert (shocking). It was great. It took hours and hours, and tons of dishes and pans, and basically the preparation and clean-up consumed the whole day (put the roast in the crock pot at 8:00 a.m. and had the kitchen finally clean about 5:00 p.m.). The eating part? Maybe 20 minutes. But crazy as it sounds, I'll probably do it next Sunday and the one after that . . .

I don't know how we started this tradition but in our household Sunday is always pizza day. We get home from church and automatically get a pizza from the freezer and start cookin'. Sometimes we'll mix it up and make pizza pockets but it is always a pizza theme.

I throw a roast or chicken in the crock pot with a couple of different kinds of veggies about an hour before church. I also put out frozen roll dough to rise. By the time we get home the rolls are ready for the oven and the roast is ready to eat. All I have to do is make one more side dish (usually fruit) and it is good to go. If I use a crock pot liner it makes the clean up super fast. Sunday dinner feels easy to me done this way.

Sunday has to be meat and potatoes around here. I do it just the way Becky described except I usually add a good amount of thin carrot sticks sprinkled with lemon pepper to the slow cooker with the meat and potatoes. A green salad completes the meal and if I remember we (the children) make a jello salad before church. Dessert is a must on Sunday, though. I usually whip it up just as we get home from church and it cooks while we set the table and eat. It's all pretty fast and easy with a minimum amount of clean up--slow cookers are nice that way.

My wife cooks the roast and potatoes. (My how similar we all eat and cook in this culture)
I usually help with things like corn on the cob, thats my boys favorite and after dinner I'll help dish out the deserts, ice cream most of the time.

My favorite memories growing up are associated with coming home from church and smelling the roast in the crock pot--except maybe on Fast Sundays. Then it wasn't so fun.

But that has to be my favorite Sunday dinner. A lot of times we do something fast and easy like soup, chili or some casserole I can pull out and bake. Saturdays are when I put a lot of effort into the meal, because nearly every Saturday one of my brothers comes over for dinner and fun.

Our tradition is on Sunday mornings, my dad will always get up early and make big pancakes, some filled with chocolate chips, strawberries, or blueberries; he also makes bacon and eggs, and sometimes sausage, and we have a great family breakfast (except on fast sundays). Though our dinner usually vary from week to week, but without fail, my mom will always whip up her special brownies and we usually eat the whole pan before the night is through.

Growing up, my family always made Spaghetti. It was quick and easy and tasted great when we were starving. I haven't established a traditional Sunday dinner yet, but we've had a few ones we want to try again. Roast seems to be a favorite-especially when I put the potatoes and carrots in with the roast to cook so I don't have extra dishes or time spent cooking those. It also tastes great when the juices from the roast and marinade mix with and cook the potatoes and carrots. My favorite roast marinade/mix has been one that my grandma started and passed to Dad who passed it to me. Rump roast, then can of cream of mushroom soup (sometimes 2 cans if roast is large) and a packet of Lipton onion soup. Then I cut a little larger pieces of bite size potoatoes and carrots and put it in with the roast to cook. Tastes great and fairly easy on the prep work and dishes. This has made me hungry for roast...may have to make it this Sunday.

Since it's summertime, my favorite right now is new peas and potatoes from the garden, with carrot lyonnaise, and some gooey chocolate chip cookies for dessert. :)

Nicole, your recipe sounds great!

Rachelle, I love fresh peas from the garden.

I'm wondering if I have time to make gooey chocholate chip cookie before my daughter's soccer game.

My favorite Sunday family activity - We make pancakes together each week for either breakfast, lunch, or dinner depending on our church schedule. My kids help make the batter, then I cook them all up. So fun and we've been doing it for years!

I love to throw a roast, potatoes and carrots in the crock pot on Sunday.
In the summer, I like a big salad.
And I don't usually do much clean up. If momma cooks, the rest of the family cleans up! :)
