I'm Writing a New Book

Officially, yes. That means that at 4:30 this morning, after the cat woke me up, I couldn't get back to sleep. I said to myself--what are you waiting for? You've made up excuses all summer. It's time to sit down and write.

Then my alter-ego said--You're crazy. Go back to sleep. You're going to be dead tired.

So at 5:00 am I found myself with the computer on, creating a new folder and typing the title of my next book. A boring title, but there's nothing I can do about it: ALMA THE ELDER.

This will be book two in the series, Prophets of the Promised Land. I wrote for a couple of hours and by 7:30 I had written 2,000 words (about 7 pages). I figured that if I can write 1,000 words a day, 5 times a week, I'll be done before Halloween. Then, with edits I can turn it in before Thanksgiving!

But I don't plan on getting up at 4:30 every morning.

How does one write 2000 words in 2 hours???!!! Oh. My. Goodness! This just baffles me to no end. I must be the slowest writer in the universe. Seriously. Every once in a while I can get in a groove and churn out a couple pages in an hour but 7 in 2 hrs!!!!

Way to go, girl!!!

If I'm in a groove, I can do that, but only because I was a secretary for years and had to learn to type fast. :D

Man, if I had insomnia, I'd be so much more productive. But me actually get up and write at 5 am? Unlikely in the extreme. Unfortunately. I'm a baby.

Let's see: 1000 x 5 x 15 = 75000. OK, that's doable.

But rewrites between Halloween and Thanksgiving? Wow. Obviously you produce a cleaner first draft than I could ever hope to write.

Tamra, I used to write 2000 words a day, now I can only do that if I know exactly what I want to happen. But most days, it's 1,000 to 1,500 words. And I only have two hours to do it in. So no luxury for writers block :) --I do type pretty fast, if that makes you feel better :)

Don--My rewrites are the job of my readers. They get to take a load off and read through the book, then I just have to go through their changes.

And there's also the experience thing--the more books you've taken from start to finish, the cleaner the first draft. Never perfect, of course--that's what readers and editors are for--but you can manage to go beyond the need to rewrite that first draft ten times like I used to have to!
