Shooting Hoops Gets in the Way of Writing

Today I watched my 10-year old daughter play in her basketball game--it's actually only her second time playing in a game. She tried out a couple of weeks for a competition team and made it. She was pretty excited. But I was pretty worried. She'd never played basketball before. The day before she tried out, I asked my husband to please show her how to shoot. I used to play, but it's been so long...

So now I've added shooting hoops with my kids to my long list of hobbies--hobbies that take the place of writing, of course.

When I mentioned to my daughter that she seemed to take after her mother in her natural sport skills, she said, "No, I take after Dad." I corrected her quickly. Because, as anyone who knows me well, knows that I received the top award in high school for being "Best Sportswoman of the Year." No kidding. Granted it was a rather small school, in the middle of the city of Jerusalem. And my only competition was about nineteen other girls. But I'll take what I can get.

It seems that late-night writing sessions will become the norm. After all, who can ignore this gorgeous fall weather and a waiting basketball standard in the driveway? I certainly can't.

You're such a great mom, and how is it fair that you can be such a great writer and a great athlete, some gals have it all!

Let's here it for priorities! Some day she'll remember shooting hoops with Mom.

As for me, I'm not only a techno-idiot, I'm also a sports idiot. I'll cheer on the sidelines, but my kids are better off w/out my sports guidance!

Dad is the sports fanatic and basketball player in our home. When I go out to play with the kids they laugh at me. Whhhaaaaaa! I can't make a hoop to save mylife.

I think it's so cool that you're a basketball gal too :)

Hey...I'm SO SO excited! I just got your book 'Of Goodly Parents" in the mail today! I wanted to let you know I'm excited before I head to the couch and put my nose in your book all day. {maybe my honey will get pizza for dinner?}

Just so you know...I left the last comment. Ooops I forgot to sign out of my personal blog! I usually post under this blog name- sorry for the confusion. :S

Thanks for the reminder--I need to spend some time with my kids. Writing will wait.

I could only get 9 chapters in yesterday reading 'Of Goodly Parents'. Dang it! I guess I have to act like a mommy since I look the part. ;)

I really love the way you write Heather! Really, it's been very smooth, informative and captivating all at the same time. I can't wait to read more today.

I don't want to put down another author- but so far I am impressed and love the way you write on this particular subject. I haven't enjoyed some other books that dealt with Lehi & Nephi's family & journey in a historical fiction novel. Thank you so much for the pleasure. You are truly talented. :)

I'm glad you're enjoying the book, Autumn. Most people tell me it's very "readable"--one reviewer said I write like a YA author. Well, Nephi is 16ish in the book. But I wanted to make it accessible to teenagers. I personally don't like books that are wordy and cumbersome with tons of description. So I write how I like to read!

I played basketball, too. None of my kids play sports, though, they're all into theater.

This is a great reminder to take time out to be "Mommy."

As a former thespian, I love theater. My sister's family is very into it and we go to Vernal a lot to see all of their plays. I did some in high school, just not the musical stuff (don't sing so great ;).
